Bad day to worst day for Aaron Hernandez. After being arrested  in a police investigation of the homicide of Odin Lloyd, a 27-year-old semipro football player, Hernandez was released by the New England Patriots. The Patriots released this statement.

““A young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss,” the team said in a statement. “Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation…At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do.”

The police will see now how much Hernandez had to do with the death of Odin but for now he is a player with no team.

The Patriots already had questions about their offense but now you have  to wonder what kind of offense the Pats will have now. With Hernandez gone, Gronkowski coming back from multiple surgeries, Danny Amendola first year in the patriots offense, Tom Brady will have a lot of weight on his shoulders to make this offense be as productive as its been in previous seasons.

Not bad. I like the jerseys. Hopefully it will make the team play better.

The Jets decided it was time to part ways with Darrelle Revis and traded him to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the 13th overall pick in Thursday night’s draft and a conditional selection next year.

The Buccaneers announced the deal on Sunday, saying Revis agreed to a new six-year contract.

The deal is worth $96 million, making Revis the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history, but includes no guaranteed money, according to sources close to the Pro Bowl cornerback.

Jets general manager John Idzik cited multiple reasons for the trade, namely the inability to negotiate a long-term extension with the cornerback and a “degree of uncertainty” regarding Revis’ rehab from a serious knee injury suffered last season.

What Does This Mean For The NFC South?

Adding Revis to the Bucs secondary surely makes them stout with Mark Barron and Dashon Goldson at safety.  Revis will be expected to shut down the likes of Marques Colston, Roddy White, Julio Jones, Vincent Jackson, and Steve Smith. While Revis has been cleared to practice, he still has to show that he can be the same player he was before the injury.  If Revis is healthy the Bucs’ defense will definitely be improved but the offense will have to improve as well to get to the playoffs.

If you haven’t heard about Brian Banks story, he was wrongly convicted of rape and spent five years in prison. He was recruited by USC and Pete Carroll but all of that was halted by the false rape conviction. After being exonerated Banks tried out for the Seahawks last season and eventually played in the UFL for the Las Vegas Locos. Yesterday Banks was signed by the Atlanta Falcons.

While this has all the makings of a hollywood movie (a documentary is in the works) Falcons GM says this is no charity case:

“This isn’t a charity case. This is a great feel good story, but it’s also one we believe he has a chance to come in here and compete,” Dimitroff said Thursday on “NFL AM”.

So what does Banks offer? Dimitroff says the combination of Banks’ obvious drive and overlooked physical skills.

“Combine all his character and all of his drive, work ethic, along with all the training he’s been doing lately,” Dimitroff said before talking about Banks’ on-field prowess. “Think about this. This isn’t just a guy that’s just slopping around. This guy is 6-footb-2, 250 pounds. Runs (the 40-yard dash) in the low 4.8s (seconds). Can get better with that? His functional movement skills were very good. We like how he’s developed.”

It’s not guaranteed that Banks will make the team. But at least he is now given the chance that was taken from him five years ago.

Seahawks Trade Matt Flynn to Raiders

The Seahawks didn’t really see a need to keep Matt Flynn and the Raiders were in need of a new QB since that Carson Palmer thing didn’t work out. The Seahawks came out as big winners getting  in exchange for Flynn draft picks in 2014 and 2015 and most importantly getting Flynn salary off their books.

Raiders send Carson Palmer to the Cardinals

The Raiders try to erase their mistake of trading for Carson “Chillin on my Couch” Palmer by trading for Matt Flynn and shipping him off to the Arizona Cardinals.  Palmer clearly wasn’t the answer for the Raiders but maybe (highly doubt) he will be the answer for the Cardinals. Palmer will at least have a future HOF to throw to in Larry Fitzgerald but the Cardinals currently have 5 QBs on the roster. Cue up that carousel music because that is exactly what is going to happen this year in Arizona.

Browns trade Colt McCoy 49ers

When the Browns drafted Brandon Weeden, Colt McCoy saw the writing on the wall. Now at least he can enjoy some better weather by getting traded to the Bay Area. The Browns have traded the fourth-year quarterback and a sixth-round draft pick to the 49ersfor a fifth-round and seventh-round draft pick, according to CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora. Jim Harbaugh made Alex Smith look legit so McCoy can only hope that some of the Harbaugh magic can wear off on him. I don’t think Colin Kaepernick will have to look over his shoulder (unless he gets a concussion).

Kevin Kolb signs with the Buffalo Bills

Kevin Kolb got his money the ski mask way when he signed with the Cardinal and played a total of 15 games. Now he’ll still have to prove he can play the game in Buffalo. But Buffalo isn’t putting all their eggs in one basked and is still considering drafting a QB in the upcoming draft.

Saints Sign Luke McCown

With Chase Daniel (aka Brees Lite) got his nice sized check from the Cheifs, the Saints needed another backup QB.  Since Brees has started all but one game in his time in N.O. the Saints are looking for a body at this point and McCown is a logical choice since he was on the team in preseason last year. I’m not sure if he’ll be on the opening day roster but for now he’s a Saint

NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported the Cardinals expect to cut Kolb soon, according to two sources briefed on the situation.

“He won’t be on the roster by this weekend,” one source told Rapoport.

The timing of the news makes sense. Kolb is due a $2 million roster bonus on March 17 and he’s due $9 million in base salary in 2013. The Cardinals made it clear that Kolb would have to take a significant pay cut to remain with the team. It sounds like that’s not going to happen.

It’s quite possible that the Cardinals simply decided that Kolb was not a fit for Bruce Arians’ vertical offense. With Drew Stanton now in place after signing in free agency, the Cardinals now look comfortable enough at the quarterback position. They have Stanton, Brian Hoyer, Ryan Lindley and John Skelton on the roster.

Now none of those names bring fear to any defense coordinator. Bruce Arians will have a lot of work to do to improve the Cardinals offense. It’s  a shame the Cardinals won’t attempt to get a real QB. Larry Fitzgerald deserves better.

In a move that will raise a big WTF among Raven fans, the team has decided to trade WR Anquan Boldin. Dion Caputi reports via twitter:

Boldin was the Ravens go to guy when they needed to move the chains so right now I think it will be quite difficult to replace him with the salary cap situation that the Ravens and all teams are dealing with.  The worst thing about winning a championship is that your team is probably not going to be the same next year as the Raven fans are finding out again. But Caputi offers more insight on the trade :

Well there you have it. The Ravens didn’t want to put up the money so a 6th round pick will help them rebuild the defense.  Will the Ravens look within their depth chart to replace Boldin or will they look to free agency? Only time will tell folks. Looks like its going to be an interesting free agency folks.

Jay Glazer reports The Seahawks and Vikings have agreed to a trade that would send wide receiver Percy Harvin to Seattle for draft picks pending he passes a physical.

This could make the Seahawks even a bigger contender in the NFC.

Black Sports Online reports last week, Florida financial advisor Jeffrey Rubin was banned from the securities industry for life after putting a group of current and former NFL players in an extremely risky investment that ultimately resulted in over $40million in losses. The group of players cheated out of millions included: Santana Moss, Plaxico Burress, Samari Rolle, Greg Olsen, Devin Thomas, Terrell Owens, Santonio Holmes, Fred Taylor, Jevon Kearse, Kyle Orton, and Clinton Portis many of whom by coincidence or not were represented by NFL Agent Drew Rosenhaus.

 Nola.com reports the New Orleans Saints placed issued  restricted free agent  running back Chris Ivory  a second-round tender, according to a source. The second-round tender consists of a one-year, $2.023 million offer.

This means if a team would want Ivory to sign a contract and the Saints wouldn’t match the offer, the Saints would receive a second-round pick from that team. The price tag is likely too high for any team to try to pluck Ivory away.

Ivory tallied 217 rushing yards last season and two touchdowns while only receiving 40 carries in a crowded backfield also containing Mark Ingram, Darren Sproles and Pierre Thomas. Ivory has been hampered by numerous injuries during his three seasons in New Orleans, but he was a healthy inactive for much of the first half of the season.

It will be interesting to see how Sean Payton utilizes Ivory this year if another team doesn’t pick him up. Ivory has to skills to be a home-run hitter but is best suited a a bruiser running back. The Saints will need to get back to a balanced offense if they want to reach the Lombardi again.
