NFL.com reports that running back DeAngelo Williams has restructured his contract to remain with the Panthers for 2013 and possibly for years to come. The report goes on to say:

Williams still will be paid $5 million this year, mostly in the form of a signing bonus. But the Panthers lowered Williams’ salary-cap number by $3.2 million this year by extending the contract and reducing Williams’ salaries in upcoming years. Williams was set to make $13 million in 2014-2015, money he surely never would have received. Now, the contract calls for Williams to receive $1.85 million in base salary in each of those seasons, in addition to some incentives and workout bonus.

I think this was the smart move for Williams. The Panthers and probably most of the NFL thought he was making too much so restructuring keeps him playing with a team he is familiar with. A win-win for both parties if you ask me.
