Nola.com reports that the cause of Sunday’s Super Bowl blackout was due to an electrical relay device.

The utility company, Entergy said the device “was specifically installed to protect the Mercedes-Benz Superdome equipment in the event of a cable failure between the switchgear and the stadium.”

A statement from the company said: “While the relay functioned without issue during a number of high-profile events — including the New Orleans Bowl, the New Orleans Saints-Carolina Panthers game, and the Sugar Bowl — during Sunday’s game, the relay device triggered, signaling a switch to open when it should not have, causing the partial outage.

“This device has since been removed from service and new replacement equipment is being evaluated.”

Well there you have it, a device built to stop power failure actually caused the power failure. While some will say this hurts New Orleans chances for hosting the 2018 Super Bowl, I don’t think it will as this year showed that New Orleans is one of if not the best place to host America’s single biggest game.
