The Chargers are doing what they can to compete again in the AFC West. Over the weekend they picked up veteran pass rusher Dwight Freeney.

According to ESPN Freeney’s contract is for two years and has a base value of $8.75 million. In 2013, he will make $5.75 million, including a $3.25 million signing bonus and $1.5 million in base salary, the sources said. The deal includes an estimated $4.5 million incentive package over the two years.

While Freeney’s production has gone down, the Chargers can use Freeney since their former 1st Round pick Melvin Ingram went down with a season ending knee injury in OTAs  last week.

The San Diego Chargers released two-time Pro Bowl linebacker Takeo Spikes on Thursday, the team announced.
He had 78 tackles last season and in 219 career games has registered 1,423 tackles, 29 sacks, 19 interceptions and 15 forced fumbles.

Spikes still wants to play in 2013 at 36 years old. While the release doesn’t look good from the Chargers, I’m sure there are a couple of teams that can use a veteran LB if the price is right.

The Norv Turner era in San Diego is over and the Chargers have chosen former Denver OC Mike McCoy as the new HC. McCoy is best known for making Tim Tebow into something of a starting quarterback and helping orchestrate this year’s Bronco’s offense to 8th in total offense in the league. According to Marc Sessler, the Arizona Cardinals had interest in McCoy but having a QB like Phillip Rivers made the decision easier.

McCoy will have his work cut out for him in SD with the majority of the talent on other teams and a very shaky O-Line but with GM A.J. Smith gone, maybe the Chargers can find and keep the talent to get them back to the playoffs and maybe a Super Bowl.
