This is the time of the year when the GM look over the books and see how much they can spend in the upcoming free agency and draft. Unfortunately for Steelers fans, some of their most well known players may not be back next season.
The Steelers won’t place the franchise tag on WR Mike Wallace so basically he’s outta here. To make matters worse Wallace may end up with division opponent the Cleveland Browns.
NFL inside man Jason La Canfora reports:
The Browns have about $30 million in space and will be big spenders under new owner Jimmy Haslam and team president Joe Banner. Many in the Steelers organization believe Wallace will end up with their division rivals in Cleveland (Haslam was a former minority owner of the Steelers), and the Browns could make a play for a pass rusher like Kruger, too. Should Vick become available, he too could be in play — this new regime badly wants to upgrade from former first-round pick Brandon Weeden — otherwise Alex Smith might make sense, among others.
Well we know that Vick will be in Philly for another year but I can expect the Browns to make a real push for Wallace. Arguably the best receiver on the Browns is Cribbs and he’s really a return guy. Adding Wallace puts some real speed at the position for the Browns who desperately need a #1 receiver. The Browns have the money now lets see if they spend it.
